To an outsider watching The Girls Next Door , life inside the Playboy Mansion seemed like a silicone-enhanced sorority (or perhaps a silicone-enhanced Sister Wives ). But to nobody's surprise, Mansion living had a seamy underbelly. I recently caught up with former Playboy Bunny Holly Madison, whose new book Down the Rabbit Hole (HarperCollins) reveals what went on behind the gates. Some of it wasn’t pretty, but in our interview, Madison focused on the blonde and bouncy aspects and shared some outrageous beauty moments Hair seems to be a big deal at the Mansion. How far did that go? “For a long time I was the only girl with natural waist-length hair. All of the other girls wore extensions. But when a new girl auditioning for Playmate showed up with waist-length hair, I decided I would cut mine. I always loved Marilyn Monroe and the old-Hollywood look, so I used that as inspiration and went shorter. Hugh had such a bad reaction to it. He was really mean to me when he saw it. I cried for days.” Did all the girls have to be blonde? “They didn't explicitly demand it, but it was more that they suggested we were busty blondes with bright-blonde hair. Hugh wanted white, white hair, with no pigment; so we would shuttle to José Eber salon once a week for touch-ups. Bridget was the only one who didn’t go white blonde. She was the only person who didn’t really go to the extremes. We would all try hard to differentiate ourselves, but Hugh really wanted us the same. There was so little I was actually allowed to do in the Mansion; so much time was spent on how we looked. We were all competing with one another.” What extremes would the girls go to in the name of beauty? "Plastic surgery. Hugh would pay if someone wanted it, so there was almost always someone in the house in recovery.” What happened on the day of a Mansion party? “Preparing took an entire day. In the morning, we would go to the salon to get our hair colored, get a deep-conditioning treatment, blowout, and style. Then nails, hair, tan, spend an hour or so on makeup, and before you knew it the whole day would be gone.” What were the parties like? “The parties were interesting and fun. They were almost holidays for the Mansion. I always liked to see what would people wear and who would come. They weren’t crazy like you might expect. We would be expected to sit with Hef at his table for the entire time. It was heavily discouraged sneaking off on your own to socialize.” What does your beauty routine look like now? “It’s changed a lot. I don’t like to spend a lot of time on my beauty routine anymore. I usually put aside an hour before red-carpet events, and I typically do my own hair and makeup. My look doesn’t deviate too much now. It changes a little depending on what I’m wearing, but it’s definitely nothing like it once was. I do still love my extensions, though.”
