“Delicious salmon cakes made with potatoes and the added color of red bell pepper and green onion. I came up with the idea for this recipe out of pure laziness. I didn’t want to wait for potatoes to boil! It turned out great and definitely became the overall favorite. I enjoy a simple garlic mayonnaise to accompany the cakes but you can pretty much use whatever you desire.”

If you believe what TV shows and movies have to say, making friends is easy-peasy, but dating is where the hard work comes in. In real life, though, things are decidedly different. Making adult friends can be just as difficult as dating, if not more. Here are a few rules that apply to both scenarios. 1. Texting intervals matter. When you're first seeing a new guy, chances are you stay on top of your texting times to ensure you're not responding at the speed of light while he does his best digital imitation of molasses. Similarly, no one wants to seem overeager when courting a new friend. If she texts to see if you're up for yoga class on Sunday and you find yourself putting off your response just a bit longer than, say, immediately, that's totally normal. 2. The awkward goodbye is always an issue. Ugh, that moment when you say goodbye, then both walk in the same direction! It's one of those teeny-but-cringeworthy moments that makes you wish you knew each other longer than one or two dates. Well, guess what. It happens with coworkers, new friends, and neighbors you run into at the grocery store too. Don't worry, we all go through it. 3. There's definitely a fine line. You want to seem curious and engaged but not overly interested like you have no other friends to hang with. 4. You get to show off different sides of yourself. Every date, whether romantic or friend-related, is a chance for you to reveal the "you" that feels most applicable to the situation. You can show off your bolder side on a motorcycle-riding date with a bad boy, just as you can settle into your more thoughtful, friendly side while meeting a friend for the book club. 5. Then you get comfortable. Finally, the magic happens. You feel totally secure being 100 percent yourself, whether that's cracking jokes, using ridiculous on-purpose puns, or rambling on about whatever. You've always known you're a great person, but feeling OK showing every inch of yourself is a true marker that you've found a keeper—whether it's a romantic interest or a new friend.
