Andreja Pejić is the world's first transgender model to be featured in Vogue

Andreja Pejić is officially in Vogue. The 23-year-old Australian has made history as the first transgender model to be profiled in the fashion bible only a year after transitioning, announcing her joy on Instagram. “Society doesn’t tell you that you can be trans,” she says in the magazine's May issue. “I thought about being gay, but it didn’t fit. . . . I thought, Well, maybe this is just something you like to imagine sometimes. Try to be a boy and try to be normal.” Andreja, who was born Andrej in Bosnia and Herzegovina and has walked in shows for Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier, confessed she was dissuaded from transitioning in order to keep her haute couture cache as a gender ambiguous beauty. “There was definitely a lot of ‘Oh, you’re going to lose what’s special about you. You’re not going to be interesting anymore. There are loads of pretty girls out there,’” she said. But the towering blonde model paid little heed, announcing in July that she had undergone sex reassignment surgery. "I was proud of my gender nonconforming career. But my biggest dream was to be comfortable in my own body," she told People. "I have to be true to myself and the career is just going to have to fit around that." And it appears it has. This year Andreja will appear as the face of Make Up For Ever, one of the first transgender models to land a major beauty campaign. In the mean time, she is currently working on a film about her reassignment surgery after it got fully funded on Kickstarter. Andreja's Vogue feature comes a week after transgender Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox was announced as one of the stars in People Magazine's annual World's Most Beautiful issue. In June 2014, Cox became the first openly transgender person to cover TIME magazine saying, "We are in a place now where more and more trans people want to come forward and say ‘This is who I am.’"
