Prince Harry doesn’t need to draw a sword to wield a powerful display of chivalry! The royal came to the defense of girlfriend Meghan Markle in an unprecedented statement Tuesday. “Worried” about her safety and “deeply disappointed” that he hasn’t been able to protect her, Harry called out the “wave of abuse and harassment” his new girlfriend has been subjected to since their relationship was made public. The groundbreaking plea is one of many gallant acts from the royal. Here are five times Prince Harry came to the rescue. 1. He served 10 years in the Army. The prince — known as Capt. Harry Wales in the Army — served two tours in Afghanistan before retiring from the Armed Forces in March 2015. “After a decade of service, moving on from the Army has been a really tough decision,” Prince Harry said in a statement at the time. “I consider myself incredibly lucky to have had the chance to do some very challenging jobs and have met many fantastic people in the process.” 2. He’s devoted to helping fellow veterans. In 2014, Harry launched the Invictus Games — a multi-sport event created specifically for wounded, injured, or sick armed services personnel. “These guys do not want sympathy,” Harry told PEOPLE in May’s exclusive cover story. “They view it as an opportunity to put on a show for all those people who have supported them. Despite being well trained and flying a multi-million dollar Apache helicopter during his second tour of Afghanistan in 2012-13, the former British Army captain says he felt powerless as he flew missions to save lives. “You turn up and you think you’re invincible in a super-duper aircraft, but you’re helpless,” he said. “Then I come back and I say, ‘How can I use my name and that spotlight to the best effect?’ ” Creating the Games, he notes, was “almost like a cure for that pain I had back then.” 3. He helped rebuild an earthquake-hit school in Nepal. After his official visit to Nepal in March, Harry made a surprise announcement that he was staying in the country to help rebuild a school that was damaged by last year’s devastating earthquakes. “The people I have met and the beauty of this country make it very hard to leave. Thankfully however, I’m not leaving just yet,” Harry said. 4. He spent the summer saving elephants. Prince Harry has a passion for protecting animals. He spent the summer working with the 500 Elephants conservation initiative in Malawi. For three weeks, he worked on the ground — and air‚ helping to anaesthetize the elephants, fix radio collars and monitor their breathing to ensure each one was safely relocated. A role that Peter Fearnhead, CEO of African Parks, described as “vital.” 5. He has a big heart when it comes to kids. For Prince Harry, children are the “upgrade of us,” so it makes it doubly important to make sure they are always involved in what he does. The prince, who set up his children’s charity Sentebale in Lesotho, Africa, more than a decade ago, told PEOPLE that whatever he and his brother Prince William and Princess Kate are doing, they hope to bring in the next generation. “All the amazing things that are going to happen in the future, it’s all going to be them,” he said. “I never want to lose touch with that generation.”

11 reasons why Meghan Markle would make a great royal

It's official: Prince Harry is dating a mere mortal–and an American one at that. The handsome, eligible royal confirmed his "taken" relationship status to the world on Tuesday with a statement from the Kensington Palace in which he asked the public to let up on harassing "his girlfriend," Meghan Markle. "It is not right, that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm," the statement read. "He knows commentators will say this is 'the price she has to pay' and that 'this is all part of the game.' He strongly disagrees. This is not a game–it is her life and his." As we respect their privacy in this exciting new relationship, we're taking a look at the public platform where Markle has chosen to share her life with us: her Instagram account. Here's what we already knew about the Suits star: She's 35 years old, and graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., before embarking on her career in Hollywood. Markle was previously married to film director Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2013, whom she worked with on the 2010 Robert Pattinson movie, Remember Me. While this Northwestern grad is a little jealous that Prince Harry picked an American girlfriend that isn't me, there's a lot to love about his new love interest. For starters, she's big on charity work, knows a thing or two about international diplomacy, and she's an avid #foodstagrammer for her lifestyle site, The Tig. Here are 11 reasons why she's already won over our hearts–and probably would do the same to the rest of the royal family.

Bella Hadid knows that as a top model for brands like DKNY and Calvin Klein, and now especially as she prepares to walk in her very first Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, her body is often going to be on display — and subject to scrutiny. But she’s shutting down any critics of her weight because, she says, she’s worked hard for her figure. “I have lost weight and gained weight,” the model tells PEOPLE exclusively during her fitting for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. In a few weeks, the 20-year-old will be walking in the lingerie show in Paris for the first time wearing two ensembles. How she will look is on her mind, as the issue of weight came up during a discussion about feeling confident on the runway while only wearing underwear. “My weight fluctuates so much,” she says. “I really didn’t mean to . Like I want boobs. I want my ass back. But it’s not my fault. My weight fluctuates and so does everybody’s and I think that if people are gonna judge, that’s the worst you can possibly do because everybody is different.” She says she lost weight “accidentally” by adhering to a strict diet and intense exercising regimen. “I worked out so hard and everybody is like, ‘Oh, she looks so skinny blah, blah, blah,” she says. “But I think that if you just stick to something you can really achieve so much. I’ve been eating hard protein every day, and working out for three hours every day. It’s crazy but I think that you know if you set your mind to something I think you can succeed.” And even when she travels a lot for work, she sticks to her routine. “I like to eat healthy and not eat crazy plane food,” she says. “I like to still make sure my diet is good and I stay hydrated and stuff. That’s basically all I do.” But she still has cheat days, she admits. “I’m going to eat pasta right now,” she says after wrapping up her fitting at the Victoria’s Secret headquarters. “If you want to have a piece of bread, go have a piece of bread.” As for training, she works out with Rob Piela at Gotham Gym, the same man who trains many of the VS models, including sister Gigi Hadid. “He’s really the best,” says Hadid. Her only rule is that she must work with him one-on-one. “I literally can’t work out with anybody,” she says. “It has to be me and him. If I am working with other people, I freak out.” Right now, other than her diet and workouts, she’s focusing on getting down the Victoria’s Secret runway feeling confident. “I think every single person in the world has insecurities,” she says. “It’s crazy because I think that when other people look at all of the VS models or all of the girls are walking, they’re like, ‘They’re not human. They don’t have any insecurities.’ But I think every single girl going to be walking probably has an insecurity.” As for hers? “I wish my ass was bigger,” she says. Ultimately, she just wants the whole VS fashion show experience to go well. “I just hope when I am out there I am not too nervous about being in my lingerie,” she says. Find out soon: The Victoria’s Secret fashion show will air on December 5 on CBS.
